We used to live near
the lake. it's cool breeze a gift
on warm summer days.
we used to live under-
neath planes. flightpaths shaking windows
on takeoff and landing.
we used to have neighbors
who screamed at their kids, which solved
nothing more than tornados.
we used to drive over
a big sunny arch, connecting one life
to another (and another).
we used to come sit
on these same park benches, watching
Lake Michigan, and its eerie blue vastness
extend... seagulls overhead, dragonflies just
hovering. trees making back-
ground music for birds to soar over.
we used to live…
or nearby it, at least.
but right now
that seems like
